What Type of In Ground Pool is Best for You?

If you’re considering an  in ground pool, you have three options – concrete, vinyl lined, or fiberglass. Each has its pros and cons, so consider them carefully before you make your final decision.

Large concrete pools are also often referred to as gunite pools, because they’re built by shooting concrete from a gun onto walls that are reinforced with steel. Once it’s cured, it’s either smoothed and painted, tiled, or finished with textured aggregate. Smaller concrete pools may be poured, in a manner similar to building a house foundation. Concrete pools are by far the most durable. Another advantage is that they can be enlarged or remodeled. The down side is that concrete pools are the most expensive, and they also take the longest to install – usually anywhere from three weeks to three months.

Vinyl pools are made using flexible liners that fit into the hole and then are attached to a frame made of aluminum, steel, or polymer. Vinyl pools are considerably less expensive than concrete, but offer less in the way of flexibility – liners don’t come in a wide variety of shapes. They do, however, come in an array of colors and patterns to suit practically anyone’s taste. If you’re considering a vinyl pool, keep in mind that sharp objects and pets can damage the liner, so vinyl liner pools are not appropriate for every lifestyle. Depending on the size and shape, a vinyl pool can be installed in anywhere from one to three weeks.

Fiberglass pools are factory molded into a single piece, and lowered into the hole using a crane. They’re coated using gel finish that’s stain-resistant and very durable. Because they’re non-porous, algae growth is typically less of a problem than with other types of pools. The main drawback is that shapes are even more limited than with vinyl pools. Also, if you’re considering a fiberglass pool, you’ll need to be sure that your yard is large enough to accommodate a crane. If you just can’t wait to get in the water, though, fiberglass is your best bet – usually, a fiberglass pool can be installed in one to three days.
